We came from the stars

万華鏡作品

我々は星から来た。
そしてまた星、その光へと、還るのだ。

皆さんは知っているだろうか？

我々の身体を作っている元素、炭素や鉄、カルシウムや水素、その他あらゆるものが、太古の宇宙・星の爆発から生み出されたものだということを。

すさまじい輝き、その爆発とともに、宇宙空間に撒き散らされた、様々な元素。それらがまた果てしない時をかけて集まり、銀河系、太陽系、そして地球を作り出した。そしてこの美しい地球の中で、本当に奇跡的な組み合わせの中で生まれた生命が、今の我々の命の源となった。

いわば、目にする木々や花々、石や水や小鳥たち、そして私たちの命そのすべてが、無数の星のカケラできている。

我々は皆すべて、美しい輝きを放ち続ける、星の子供たちなのだ。

この稀有な流れでできた、尊い命。この世に生まれ、悩み苦しみながらも、幸福を感じ、そして最後に粉々に砕け散ってもなお、また星へと帰っていく。

そこでまた新たに、闇の中で、あたたかな光を、放ち続けるのかもしれない。

そんな命そのものの本来の輝きを、奇跡的な尊さを、皆さんと分かち合いたいと思った。

この作品は、粉々にされたアクリル写真の破片を、丸底フラスコの中に入れ、ゆっくりと回転させている。そのリアルタイムの映像をモニターに映し出し、そこに三角柱の鏡を当てて、万華鏡を生み出している。

アクリルの写真は2022年、フランスの世界最古のシャンパーニュメゾン、Ruinartのアートレジデンス・プログラムに参加した際に撮影されたもの。惜しくも今年、そのRuinartの最高醸造責任者であるフレデリック・パナイオティスさんが亡くなられた。

何度も会話を交わした彼の気さくな人柄、流暢な日本語、心温まる交流の思い出が、この粉々になった写真の中には含まれている。

その彼も今、星に還ったのだ。我々もまたいつか還るように。

We come from the stars.

And we will return to the stars, to their light.

Do you know?

That the elements which make up our bodies—carbon, iron, calcium, hydrogen, and all other elements—were created from the explosions of ancient stars and the universe long ago.

With their incredible brilliance, these elements were scattered into space through these cataclysmic explosions. Over endless periods of time, they gathered again to form galaxies, solar systems, and ultimately, Earth. Within this beautiful planet, life was born through a truly miraculous combination, becoming the source of our existence today.

In a sense, everything we see—trees, flowers, stones, water, birds, and even ourselves—is made up of countless fragments of stars.

We are all children of the stars, shining with a beautiful radiance that continues to glow.

This precious life, born from a rare cosmic process, came into this world. Despite suffering and struggles, it feels happiness, and even when it shatters into pieces at the end, it returns once more to the stars.

Perhaps, in that place, it will continue to emit a warm light in the darkness.

I wanted to share with you the inherent brilliance and miraculous preciousness of life itself.

This artwork involves fragments of acrylic photographs shattered into pieces, placed inside a round-bottom flask, slowly rotated. The real-time footage is displayed on a monitor, and a triangular prism mirror is used to create a kaleidoscope effect.

The acrylic photographs were taken in 2022 during my participation in the art residency program at Ruinart, the world's oldest Champagne house in France. Sadly, this year, Frédéric Panaïotis, chef de cave at Ruinart, passed away. His friendly personality, fluent Japanese, and warm interactions are reflected within these shattered images.

He has now returned to the stars, just as we someday will.

In the very brilliance and light itself.
